West Virginia Fall Foliage Spectacular IX

October 12th, we made our way from The Neighborhood Academy in Pittsburgh to catch the beautiful sunset at Cooper’s Rock overlook in West Virginia. Amongst the 22 person group were many individuals, ranging from all ages, genders, and mileage to make up a small portion of the PYL family. As many of you Pittsburgh residents know it rained Saturday. However, great determination while on The Great Alleghany Passsage trail didn’t dampen the spirits of the group. A family style pizza party that night at the hotel refueled the group for intense climbs the next day. It’s hard to impress some of the veterans we have when they have been to such great places in the past. Although, some would say, “Cycling to the overlook during fall when the leaves are changing with close friends is one way to do so.” I would agree.

Return to the Blue Ridge 2019

The Blue Ridge Mountains are starting to become PYL's backyard. Making our way from West Virginia we cycled through Shenandoah National Park. The park is 105 miles of beauty and uphill. On the contrary, The Blue Ridge Parkway makes it seem flat. The parkway is tremendous! However, the kids are more so. This is quite possibly the most difficult trip we do.

Mexico to Canada 2019

After 16 days of cycling this tremendous group becomes victorious. The journey consisted of tons of miles and obstacles. In which they conquered in order to get to Canada. As you can imagine cycling from the Gulf of Mexico to Sault St. Marie is no normal thing for the youth. However, they successfully did so with great attitudes along the way.

PYL Girls Trip June 2019

The first day of the trip the ladies biked approximately 50 miles to the first destination of East Liverpool, Ohio. Battered with rain, sunshine, some head winds, more rain, and a few big hills all 3 ladies completed the first day successfully. It was a great trip overall. Check out a youtube video from the trip - https://youtu.be/GQAKVPh41bE

Solidarity Ride

Twelve members of Congregation Dor Hadash and 6 members of the Pittsburgh Youth Leadership group set out for a 60-mile bike ride from Pittsburgh to Connellsville on The Great Allegheny Passage. This bike ride had a special purpose. The PYL youth wanted to host the members of Congregation Dor Hadash on a healing solidarity ride.

Winter Beach Delight 2019

As tradition the weather was not in our favor , but others would use weather as an excuse to stay inside ! Rolling hills, rainy days, weather below 40 degrees, I could not imagine a better way of cycling to the Atlantic!

TNA MIddle School Bike Trip 2019

On March 19th and 20th, eight young men from the Neighborhood Academy Middle School cycled from downtown Pittsburgh to Connellsville over the course of two days, taking in the beautiful and serene sights of the Greater Allegheny Passage along the way.

Middelschoolers Gap Ride 2019

Five 7th and 8th graders from the Neighborhood Academy reconvened at a lunch table in Connellsville at Yough River Park, building on their previous experience, the Neighborhood Academy Middle Schoolers showed growth, determination and a willingness to push through discomfort. Riding 45 miles each day on mountain bikes with no training proved difficult, but these kids pushed through the steady incline of the Great Allegheny Passage to reach the Eastern Continental Divide.

Spring Trip 2019

A group of 10 strong young cyclists and 3 PYL alumni cycled gallantly from Harrisburg PA to Nyack NY. Highlights included biking through Fort Indiantown Gap and getting up close to a gigantic military plane, visiting a Hamburg in PA and in NY and spotting a giant snapping turtle crossing the road in the middle of Jersey. Many great memories were made and the group had a great time along the way. Aging PYL alumni were thrilled to be back with the group. Total mileage 229.

Fall Foliage 2018

PYL packed a lifetime of experiences into a weekend during the annual Fall Foliage ride through Maryland and West Virginia. Traveling through Coopers Rock State Forest, Deep Creek Lake, and Blackwater Falls State Park to end at the majestic Seneca Rocks was a truly amazing adventure. Despite the difficult, character building climbs the co-ed group stayed upbeat, positive and biked like champions! Everyone ended the weekend eagerly awaiting next years return trip.

PYL Takes On Colorado

ANOTHER PYL ADVENTURE! This spectacular one had been filled with ad seriatim national park visits including The Great Sand Dunes and The Black Canyon. As if climbing The Rocky Mountains wasn't enough to build character having wonderful bologna sandwiches on the side of barren roads is. Needless to say this great trip is an incredible opportunity for the youth of Pittsburgh.

Quintessential Quebec

KIDS COMMENTS on Quebec Trip: The Quebec trip was amazing and beautiful. The trip allowed me to focus on preparing for my first year of college. While on the trip, I had ample time to think about life and what I need to do before I leave for school. It was so peaceful and freeing to be able to do so. I was reminded of not only my physical abilities but also my mentality of not giving up when things become tough. -Desmond Hargrove The Quebec trip was great way for me to see new things and to start off exploring the world. It was great way to think about life and connect with nature,. It gave me a chance to learn more about myself as a person and to build up my character. -Zaire Mitchell

Grant Street to Bourbon St

On this grand voyage, Pittsburgh Youth Leadership not only triumphed over various terrains, but also experienced all four seasons while doing so. During this astonishing trip the whole group soaked in the beautiful vistas and enjoyed several landmarks such as 5 State Capital Buildings, Muhammad Ali Museum, the Louisville Slugger factory and the birth place of Abraham Lincoln. A very memorable experience with plenty of history. Traveling along the Natchez Trace Parkway, the footprints of slave trade and Choctaw was very apparent. The non-commercial Route is perfect for deep reflection. Safe to say this trip was not only a breeze but a ton of fun! Mentchaas Anderson and Darrell Rodgers-PYL Alumni
